The basis for Smithee was found in an old french foundry’s wood type specimen. It’s mechanical and rather straight forward shapes balanced with some subtle twists (“a”, “s”…) immediately attracted me. Although other styles existed, I choose to develop the extra-condensed one, which reminded me of Edward Wright’s titling for Whitechapel Art Gallery’s 1956 exhibition “This Is Tomorrow”. In 2017, I decided to put it back on the worktable to refine the drawings, double the glyphset and revise the overall kerning. “Série A” (the former name of the typeface) becomes “Smithee”.
